(pause) OK where do I sign up? How did you know that from the time I started working I have always pondered on the question of is it possible to quit my day job. Here it is 173 years later and I'm wondering that same question.
As far back as 200 years ago our home dwelling wasn't just a place to live, it was a center of commerce. Ah OK you may not know what a work center of commerce even is? The short version is

Home businesses can be tracked back as far as the 1800's
These enterprises had been where families took residence on the second floor of their house.
Usually they converted the first floor into a shop, and after they closed their work from home business they would protect the first floor and retire to the upper levels. This type of dwelling enterprise is still goes on today in some rural areas.

The Mayflower came to America November 11, 1620, after a 70 days journey from England the ship dropped anchor in Cape Cod. In the 17th century the English immigrants, like most people, worked in the textile business, weaving cloth on looms in the home.
Whether by running a cabin commerce or a family ranch, our ancestors earned a living not far from where they ate and slept.
Work started moving away from our dwellings throughout the developed revolution. Now, in the data age, work-at-home jobs are profiting new ground.

Every forenoon, Sara and I roll out of bed about 7:30, take a wash, eat our morning meal, watch CNN, or read a bit of news, and then we head to work.
In our case, work is about five steps from the kitchen. OK the truth is I swing my legs from the dinette over to my computer, and Sara goes to the garden.
We are among the estimated 30-40 million Americans who work from their humble dwelling place (there's no place like home). The very low start-up costs, flex-hours, and the Internet are fueling the growth of the home-business phenomena.
The low estimate is that there are 150 Million people working in a home based business in North America alone that are enjoying the freedom and benefits of running their own home-based-online-business.

Many like Me and Sara work at home full-time, while others are part-timers to supplement the families income. A few work are working for employers from home, and others work as freelancers. But the main growth in this sector is coming from those that operate their own home-based enterprise as the owner of their business.
Working from where you live isn't new, of course. Family ranches have been around as long as the human race has existed.
More lately, European merchants of the Middle Ages often had their stores on the first floor of their houses, and their dwelling quarters up the stairs. In the 18th and 19th centuries, women often were committed in cabin industries engaging sewing and rotating.
But most of us increased up in positions in which "work" was some place other than at dwelling. Work was at the agency over town or at the manufacturer several miles away.
Even so, work-at-home businesses have never gone away completely, and with the advent of cheap computers and high-speed Internet connections, numerous tasks that utilized to be finished in "traditional agency" space can now be finished in "virtual" space.
The Web furthermore has simplified the product-ordering method for people involved in home-based direct sales, and has let down the "cost of application" for budding entrepreneurs who can now conceive businesses with a worldwide come to on a shoestring allowance.
While employed from home is enjoying a new heyday, don't get the concept that home-based work is for everyone. Being very candid, some people easily aren't cut out for it.
Being self-employed, particularly full-time, demands that one be organized, you must be self-starting, perfectionist attitudes, a pure perfectionist which will restrict your time for outside communication. Understanding your way round a computer helps also. (But the new businesses require very little work).
